Programme Overview: 

The Eden Garden Volunteer Programme provides structured opportunities for community members to contribute to the care, presentation, and preservation of the garden. Volunteers assist with practical horticultural and maintenance tasks that enhance the space's safety, beauty, and functionality. 

The programme is designed to: Support core garden operations, Maintain high presentation standards, Strengthen community connection, Provide meaningful, hands-on experience, and Enhance visitor experience. 

Types of Volunteers We’re Looking For: Casual Volunteers 

(Ad-hoc Commitment)

Assist with general garden tasks, including weeding, raking, deadheading, branch collection, and general tidying. 

Core Volunteers (Regular Weekly Commitment)

Reliable volunteers who commit to consistent weekly sessions and support ongoing maintenance and presentation standards.
Core Volunteers may also take ownership of a designated garden area, helping maintain its health, appearance, and overall presentation over time. 

Restoration Volunteers (Painting & Infrastructure Support)

Assist with prepping and painting benches, minor repairs, and improving public-facing features.
Horticultural or trade skills advantageous.

Propagation Volunteers (Plant Production for Sale)

Support the garden’s sustainability by producing healthy, high-quality plants for sale on the plant stand.

Current focus is on propagation specifically for sale stock. 

Corporate & Group Volunteer Programme (Team Volunteer Days)

Structured, supervised volunteer days for organisations, schools, and community groups.
Sessions are practical, productive, and designed to support garden operations while providing a meaningful team experience.

  • Why did you choose to start volunteering here?

    I'm just going through a breast cancer journey at the moment and decided I needed to fill my time in but have enough energy to do something. I wanted to give back to the garden because there's a huge family connection for me here, with my grandparents and parents. I'm also a huge gardener but I don't have a garden of my own at the moment and so I'm really loving it, I've seen into my third season almost with spring. I started in autumn and I've been blown away, even winter is just stunning here despite the cold. It is just a beautiful spot and there's just so many different varieties of plants and while I'm reasonably knowledgeable in the botanicals I've learned so much in my time here.

  • What sort of things do you do around the garden?

    It depends a bit on the season. We did a bit of planting these beds with tulips, removing weeds, a lot of raking. That is a particularly big job in the winter but come spring there'll be other jobs. Today I have been clearing and cleaning benches. Trying to tidy up and cleaning around the plaques and memorials as best you can without disturbing things because a lot of people have planted trees and some people have plaques with them.

  • What do you enjoy about volunteering here?

    Well every week you come and a lot of the stuff we do is maintenance but each time we just see so much growth and potential in the garden. Just having Mt Eden right behind us is so beautiful, and the garden is so nice to take in around you. Hillary track is one of the most beautiful, it's a fairly steep track up to one of the best views in Auckland. You can see across even into the harbour, it's beautiful. I always like to go and have a look after each volunteer session and have a look around and take a moment to just be in nature.
